Opinion piece: Who do our experts want to host Eurovision?

Who do Emily and Elliot think will be announced as Eurovision 2016 hosts?

Emily

Hosting a Eurovision Song Contest is a tough job, and I think to do it well you’d have to be a confident person with some experience in working in TV. Personally, I would like to see the likes of Måns Zelmerlöw and Petra Mede as a duo, with Sarah Dawn Finer mixed in there somewhere, like that of Malmö 2013. Måns has the likeability factor and, like Conchita as the green room host, brings some more excitement to the contest, especially for the Eurofans as it’s always great to see returning artists no matter what context that may be.

As for Petra, I think she did an amazing job in 2013 on her own and we know that she would be able to handle doing it again. She’s funny (not in a cheesy-joke sort of way either), and would make a dream team if put with Måns. SDF would just top it all off, with her short segments (again, like 2013) as extra comedic value and gives the production crew more time to set up the staging/prepare the artists to make it an all-round brilliant show.

Elliot

Let’s be honest and realistic with ourselves for a second, the Eurovision hosts list is probably as long, if not longer than the list of countries for the contest itself and whoever takes the role alongside Mans will be a brilliant choice. SVT is renowned for delivering a great show and hosts with entertaining qualities, and part me of wanted Gina to have the main gig but as she is the Meldofestivalen host its time to strike Eurovision wish list.

Eurovision 2015 winner Mans Zelmerlow
Anyway I believe SVT should go with three hosts – two on the main stage and one in the green room, last year the three on stage just did not work and we saw no real personality from them as they are splitting up what was already a short time frame into three equal parts – didn’t work, as we know Mans is one but the people I believe who should be alongside him are the following – Sarah Dawn Finer and Danny Saucedo.

Now I think Sarah and Danny could be in either position, but if I had the control, put Sarah on stage and Danny in the green room. They are both entertaining, both established artists and both have tried and failed to represent Sweden at Eurovision so there is potential for comedy and banter at their expense. Sarah Dawn Finer is such a large personality and character she would be in her element and get the audience right on board in a heartbeat and she is very entertaining to watch. Also with Mans, Danny and Sarah all hosting Melodifestivalen, they have the presenting skills for such a show and format down perfectly and therefore have a strong connection with Eurovision which is the viewing public will enjoy as they will respect the contest for what it is in all of its entirety.
Saying this there are plenty of other credible hosts who would do a great job, Petra, Sanna, Eric to name just a few, but in my heart of hearts I would love the line up to be Mans Zelmerlow, Sarah Dawn Finer and Danny Saucedo.

Elliot Interviews Minus One

Find out what happened when Elliot Harris spoke to Cypriot Eurovision 2016 entry, Minus One...

It was recently announced that “Minus One” would be representing the island of Cyprus in Eurovision 2016 – a decision taken internally by the broadcatsers CYBC, I was able to contact them recently and get a few answers of how they are feeling towards the competition and what we can expect to see from the rock band that is “Minus One”

Hello there guys thankyou for giving up your time for us!

So Minus One, last year you came third 3rd in the Cypriot selection final. How does it feel to be selected internally for Stockholm?

It's great! We wouldn't want to go through another selection, once was enough, so when we were internally selected it worked out perfectly and we are very happy that CYBC trusted us with this.

You have been an established band since 2009 so with plenty of experience. Do you feel this could help when it comes to the live performance in May?

Definitely, we have bonded through the last 6 years and that can only be a good thing, I mean, we're still here, so obviously things are working out.
We are like a well oiled machine, when we get on stage great things just happen.

Minus One took part in the Cypriot selection last year
It's also been announced you will be working with Thomas G:Son for the track. How did this collaboration come to be and with his Eurovison experience how do feel to work with him?

Actually CYBC came up with the idea and we found it very intriguing. We love writing our own stuff but collaborations can be a lot of fun and open up new musical directions.
We are very excited to work with Thomas, he is a great guy and we really hit it off socially and musically.

Cyprus’ highest finish has been 5th on three occasions. Are you hoping to surpass this?

Of course we are, but hey.... if we don't, we hope to have a hell of a ride!

Since Lordi winning in 2006. The Rock/metal genre has not been as successful as other musical styles. Are you hoping to rectify this and how so?

We like to believe that a good song is exactly that, a good song. Even if Rock/metal songs are not as popular in this competition a good song is always appreciated.
We are not a Metal band so you can rule that out but we do have a lot of attitude (veeeery different from Lordi ) and we will show it in the song but we will also
Definitely bring it with us to Stockholm.

You stand as the only established rock band in Eurovison 2016 so far. Are you happy to stand alone in the genre or would you like some direct competition?

We'll be totally honest here and say.... Are we happy to stand alone? hell no!! The most awesomest of awesomes would be if all countries were entering with established Rock Bands.
I mean...that would be a party!

Do you have a favourite song from Eurovison 2015 that was not Cyprus' own Giannis Karayannis?

We liked his song actually, other than that we didn't really hear a lot.
Cyprus finished 22nd in Vienna, Austria
Has the band or any of their members been to Stockholm or performed there in the past?

No, we have all been to many places around Europe for shows and also the USA. We're really looking forward to Stockholm.

Finally, Eurovison is such a visual spectacle can we expect anything special from you guys with the staging and effects for the semi final and hopefully grand final?

We haven't finished the song yet so we have to wait and see. It is still early to know about the staging but we will let you know as soon as we do.

So Minus One seem to up for the challenge of Eurovision, how do you think the band could potentially fare in May? Let us know your thoughts and opinions!

UK in Eurovision 2016: What needs to be done to taste success in Stockholm?

In the second of two opinion blogs, The Euro Trip blogger Elliot Harris takes a look at the route he'd like the BBC to take when it comes to Eurovision 2016.

As we know the United Kingdom has announced essentially an open casting call for their Eurovision representative.

Bonnie Tyler sang 'Believe In Me' in Malmo in 2013
For me I feel we need, and I have said for many years amongst friends, is that we need to send a up tempo song, nothing swing, no ballads, simple easy listening up tempo, something with replay ability and mainstream, basically what Sweden did last year and looked what happened. The UK’s problem is that in recent years we have played the gimmick of “big name” card with no effect, trying to stand out with a big name is pointless without a decent song to back it up (Bonnie Tyler anyone?) At the end of the day the song needs to be good enough ANYONE can perform it and do a good job, so first and foremost we need to focus on the song, maybe take some Scandinavian pop influences perhaps?

As for the performer itself to grace the stage and fly the flag for the United Kingdom in Stockholm, if I had my way I would probably send someone from the X Factor or The Voice, someone with stage and competition experience, it won’t be a big leap from what they are used to. I think someone with that experience would work wonders potentially, but if we were not to send someone from that area I personally would love Sam Smith to go, he is my favourite UK act in the last decade and love his song and his performance and is a fantastic songwriter, however with him just releasing his new single for the new James Bond film, something tells me he doesn’t have to do Eurovision anytime soon.

Well they are my thoughts on the UK for Eurovision 2016, feel free to agree and disagree on the comments, but let us see what happens with the UK in Sweden, hopefully not languishing near the bottom of the leader board once again. Elliot

Can the UK do well at Eurovision again, and what do they need to do to succeed?

In the first of two opinion blogs, The Euro Trip blogger Emily Herbert takes a look at how the UK had enjoy success at Eurovision next year.

Over the past few years, the UK have gained a reputation of doing “bad” at Eurovision, but why? Perhaps we haven’t quite got the formula right. It’s hard to tell what song you’d like to see at a contest when you don’t know what genre the other songs are (e.g is it a ballad year like 2015?). What I’ve found is that if a solo female wins the year before, there’s an increase in solo female artists the year after (2013 for example). The same goes with duets; The Common Linnets came 2nd in 2014 for The Netherlands, and we saw an increase in duet entries in 2015.

So, if we look at the top of the leaderboard in 2015, we see that we obviously have Sweden at the top with Måns Zelmerlöw, his catchy pop song and captivating graphics. Perhaps cool graphics are the way to go? Stage presentation is key. With Electro Velvet, the stage looked nice and colourful, but VERY busy, and so that could have made it forgettable. Additionally, we haven’t sent a (young) solo male artist in a while, maybe now is the right time?!

Jade Ewen sang the UK to 5th in Moscow
Songwriting is also key. Whoever ends up producing the song for this year must have experience or background in the industry, or at least done research on the competition so they know what they’re looking for. Gary Barlow for example (though I have a feeling he mentioned he didn’t want to do Eurovision?) would be a good choice, with the success of Take That and the X Factor. Andrew Lloyd Webber was the songwriter for Jade Ewen in 2009 where she came 5th (and that year was a tough one!), so that is one factor that needs carefully deciding.

Personally, as much as I’d like a National Final, the quality of the songs may not be as good as if it was selected internally with a good songwriter. If the NF was at Melodifestivalen standard (which I think is the best NF), there would be more budding artists wanting to get involved with good quality songs, but for now I think that the country doesn’t take the contest seriously enough.

In 2016 I’d like to see a powerful solo male ballad from the UK, produced by a well-known composer or songwriter. I don’t think there are ever enough male solo ballads at the contest and they do relatively well (e.g Andras Kallay-Saunders or even Johnny Logan). A young artist would be better (see Engelburt Humpadinck), thought they have to be experienced and not so nervous (see Josh Dubovie). With the right staging, strong vocals and support from the public, I believe we could do well again. Emily

Elliot and Emily review 'Hopscotch' by Emmelie De Forest

Last week Emmelie De Forest released her latest single 'Hopscotch'. Reactions were mixed across social media, so we got The Euro Trip contributors to give us their thoughts...

Elliot

Emmelie won Eurovision in 2013
"Only Teardops is still my favourite Eurovison winner so far but this wouldn't make it out of the semis if sent it to Eurovison. The main backing track and beat is pleasant, very light and doesn't offend but the issues lies with her and her lyrics and vocals.  Firstly the lyrics are bland and repetitive, it feels like it was wrote for a Disney star not a ex Eurovison winner, she says in the song (multiple times) “going for the perfect ten” but this is far from it.

Overall the lyrics don't hit the mark for me and I got bored half way through but the beat is ok and could get stuck in your head but it feels this is aimed at the 16 and under market for certain."

5.5/10

Emily

"From the first listen I could tell straight away that “Hopscotch” was different from Emmelie’s other singles like Only Teardrops and Rainmaker as it’s more upbeat and easily gets stuck in your head. It’s very catchy from the very start, with the “I live my life like I’m on a hopscotch” becoming a cheesy hook line. I do like this song, but perhaps not as much as the other songs mentioned. Nice and cheerful, with a strong chorus makes it a great song.

I do think it gets too repetitive towards the end however, making it slightly annoying to listen to unfortunately. I don’t mind the song but I’ve heard better from her. My overall rating will have to be a 7/10."

Eurovision Fact file: Albania

Recently, Albanian broadcaster RTSH announced the submission dates for their annual music event, Festivali i Kenges – which since 2003 has also doubled up as a national selection for Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest – so we saw it fit to look back on Albania and their time in contest in years gone by.

Albania first entered Eurovision back in 2004 in Turkey, Anjeza Shahini was the entrant with the song “The Image Of You” and despite it being their debut year, Albania placed seventh in the grand final, to this day is they second highest finish in the contest. The only time Anjeza’s efforts have been surpassed was in 2012 in Azerbaijan, when Rona Nishliu and her rather unique vocals stormed the voting and finished fifth in the grand final, scoring 146 points.

Elhaida Dani performing in Vienna
In the twelve times Albania have entered they have failed to qualify on five occasions – 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013 and 2014, the lowest placing coming in 2007 where they finished 17th in the semi final. Last May Elhaida Dani and “I’m Alive” scoring only 34 points in the Final, despite it being one of the public’s top picks leading up to the contest, she was heavily marked down in the jury final, placing 20th in contrast with the public, who had ranked the song 9th overall in the final.
When it comes to the voting with Albania in the grand final, they have one clear ally in where their points go – Greece. In the 12 contests that Albania has participated in, they have awarded Greece a whopping 119 points – that’s 9.9 points on average per contest.

When it comes to countries voting for Albania however, their most common source of points have come from Macedonia, who have awarded hem 79 points over the years, followed shortly by Greece who have given 63 points.

Although it is currently unconfirmed if Albania will be participating in Stockholm next year, their strong qualification makes this highly likely, with a decision expected in the coming months.

Meet the team: Elliot Harris

Here at The Euro Trip we're delighted to welcome another brand new member, introducing Elliot Harris...

__________________________________________________________________________________________

"Hello everyone, my name is Elliot Harris I am 22 and from the United Kingdom, the nation who seems to bomb every year at Eurovison.

Outside of Eurovison you can find me either dancing for which I have done ten years now, watching football or tennis or sat writing something of some sort. These are my main hobbies and passions in life

Azerbaijan won the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest
I have always loved music and this is partly why I love Eurovison. I love the diversity and different influences of music, from the pop fun of Scandinavia to the ethnic Arabian style you hear from the likes of Turkey and Azerbaijan, it's a beautiful blend. I also love the element of competition and how that has grown in recent years.

My favourite contest to date is still the 2011 edition in Düsseldorf, Germany. I loved so much about it. The r stage in the round was different and nice, the presenter were amusing, but not forced and the music was brilliant. So many good songs made choosing a winner nigh on impossible for me. All in all a well produced and executed show by Germany.

My favourite European singer has to be Mr Danny Saucedo. Although there are many other talented singers Danny has always stood out to me with his music and performance abilities. I first heard him in Melfest 2012 and since then Ioved the versatility in his voice and music, being able to perform mainstream pop hits to ballads with the same high level. Plus I love his dancing, he makes it all seem so effortless and fluid. In a nutshell I'm captivated by him when he performs and it’s a shame he has not yet represented Sweden at Eurovison.

Well that's me I look forward to writing here on The Euro Trip and hearing all your thoughts!"

Meet the team: Emily Herbert

Here at The Euro Trip we're delighted to welcome a couple of brand new members of the team. First up welcome @EurovisionEmiy.

_________________________________________________________________________________

"Hey there!
My name is Emily (full name: Emily Grace Herbert), though many people call me Em.

I’m currently 17 years old and live in Leeds, England where I was born and raised. I’ve been watching the Eurovision Song Contest since I was 8 years old, my first contest being 2006. From then onwards I’ve watched the contest casually, but since 2012 I’ve fully gotten myself into it using social media.

Emily's favourite artist, Alexander Rybak
My favourite contest is a toss-up between 2009 and 2013, mainly because I loved both the standard of songs and the graphic designs such as the stages and logos, but also because they feature two out of many favourite winners of mine. I’d say that Alexander Rybak is the artist I now follow the most outside of the contest, though I love watching the National Finals as it then gives the potential to discover new music/artists that I could further explore if I liked their style (plus, it’s fun to livetweet along with shows like that, giving quite unforgettable experiences!).

I haven’t yet gone to see a show live unfortunately, however I’m planning on going to Amsterdam in 2015 to Eurovision In Concert to meet some of my Eurovision friends I’ve met over Twitter and to finally see a show. I have a few favourite Eurovision countries (aka ones I seem to love the entries for ever year) such as Norway, FYR Macedonia, Serbia and Estonia.

My favourite genre within the contest is probably Balkan ballads e.g Nije Ljubav Stvar/Oro as I find they’re so soothing and peaceful, plus I prefer non-English entries as I love the sounds of other languages. That being said, I thoroughly enjoy Schlager such as that being shown in Melodifestivalen occasionally, making that NF amongst my favourites.

I hope you enjoy my posts!"

Plenty of incredible brand new music to get you to the weekend!

Rob here, and while there might not be any podcast this week, that doesn't mean we're not itching to bring you some exciting brand new music from across the continent.

Right now I'm particularly excited about the stuff coming out of Scandinavia - but that isn't to say we'll be ignoring the rest of Europe in this run down of some of the hottest new releases.

So here we go, this is our selection but as ever let us know your thoughts. Tweet us - @theeuro_trip.

Sandra Lyng - Play My Drum (Norway)

An angelic voice with some beautifully thought out lyrics and an infectious chorus, oh and lets now forget the saxophone too! This song has something for everyone, being the perfect mix of past and present music trends.

Leyl & Lockvogel - Ne Sekunde Sommer (Austria)

A dance track with a difference. Similarly to 'Play My Drum' this song builds slowly into an uptempo rapid beat melody, with the vocals matching the tone perfectly. They'll be dancing to this in the night clubs of central Europe for a long time to come.

Vigiland & Tham Sway - Shots and Squats

As the title suggests, this song doesn't take itself seriously. Shots and Squats is an anthem to be embraced by young men across Scandinavia, and perfect for the care free nature of the summer months. Don't be surprised to hear this one make its way into the dance scene of the UK sometime soon.

Stay tuned, as there'll be a brand new episode of The Euro Trip for you next week! x

The Winners & Losers of Eurovision 2015

If we can agree on one thing, it's surely that this year's Eurovision winner was predictable. A good looking man, singing for one of the Scandinavian power houses was always going to be a success.

Two Eurovision winners now on the BBC Radio 2 Playlist
Rightly so of course. 'Heroes' shows how Eurovision has come a long way since the cheesy ballads of the mid noughties (of course there's still plenty) and moved to more relatable songs which wouldn't sound out of place if played on any mainstream radio station.
You only have to look at the BBC Radio 2 playlist this week to see an example of this, with both Mans Zelmerlow and Conchita included.

So while none of us would have been surprised at Mans' Eurovision victory, many of us would have been left shocked at the final placings of several countries this year.

Winners

Belgium - Loic Nottet, Rhythm Inside

Formerly one of Eurovision's constant losers, the small northern European nation has had a recent resurgence when it comes to the world's biggest music competition. Loic's fourth place finish represents Belgium's best placing since they finished as runners up in 2003. Rhythm Inside was only tipped by a few before the contest (definitely not us), but hugely impressive staging saw many Euro fans impressed with their efforts this year.

 Latvia - Aminata, Love Injected

Considering they had failed to reach the final since 2008, Latvia will be delighted with their showing in Vienna this year. While 'Love Injected' may have proved a marmite tune amongst the hardcore fans, it was the uniqueness of the song which saw them perform strongly with the first time viewers during Saturday night's big final. As a country who would surely love to host Eurovision again, this was definitely a step in the right direction.

 Losers

Italy - Il Volo, Grand Amore

Now, it may seem stupid to consider third place as losing, but let me explain. Had just televoting been taken into account as was the case between 1998 and 2008, Italy would have been the clear winners. Il Volo's incredible performance on Saturday night saw them dominate the vote from the viewers at home, with many claiming them to be the 'real winners' of Eurovision 2015. Whichever side of the arguement you side with, you can understand why the Italians might be less than impressed.

France - Lisa Angell, N'oubliez pas

Lets make things clear, France tried very hard in 2015. Lisa Agnell is a highly respected artist across the continent, but a combination of factors meant that they can once again be disappointed. The staging was brilliant, emotive and powerful. The draw however, meant that a beautifully constructed ballad was lost in the midst of the largest Eurovision final in history. France have been drawn in the first half in three of the last four finals, surely their luck has to change sooner rather than later.

Lets not forget Austria too. They easily cement themselves as one of the best Eurovision hosts ever, and Europe can't even thank them with a single point. Poor guys.

Rob's Eurovision 2015 Predictions: Who'll take home the title?

So we've seen Producer Jonny's predictions, and now it's my attempt at predicting the top five positions in Eurovision 2015. I predicted the top 5 last year, so here's hoping I can match that this year!

The Eurovision Trophy

I'll be heading to Vienna for the competition in just a few days time, and these are the songs which I'm really excited about.

(This took me ages! Honorable mentions to Estonia and Belarus, both of whom came very close to my top five.)

---

NO.5: Albania: Elhaida Dani "I'm Alive"

A country which always sits to the left of the leader board finally deserves that recognition. Elhaida Dani was a hugely popular winner of the Voice in Italy, and proves her worth with a stunning vocal performance. If Suus can achieve 5th place, then 'I'm Alive' really could be the dark horse of this year's contest.

NO.4: Norway: Morland & Deborah Scarlett "A Monster Like Me"

In a sea of duets in 2015 Morland and Deborah Scarlett produce the stand out performance. This pair have chemistry than Electro Velvet can only dream of, with the staging echoing some aspects of the Common Linnets performance last year. Sure to be well supported by the western European nations I wouldn't be surprised it tops the 200 point mark.

NO.3: Azerbaijan: Elnur Huseynov "Hour of the Wolf"

Elnur returns to Eurovision after a 7 year break and his comeback is definitely something special. It's impossible to compare 'Hour of the Wolf' to Elnur's previous attempt at Eurovision glory, but it isn't inconceivable that we could be heading back to Baku once again. A favourite with the hardcore Eurovision fans he is guaranteed big points from the Eastern nations.

NO.2: Italy: Il Volo "Grande Amore"

There is something very adorable about Il Volo. Three hot young Italians was always going to get the hearts of Eurovision fans across the continent racing, but the emotion of Grande Amore is something very hard to forget. I can already imagine the reaction in the hall when they hit that powerful final note. These guys will run Mans very close.

NO.1: Sweden: Mans Zelmerlow "Heroes"

I have always loved Mans Zelmerlow, and his entry for Eurovision this year is simply magnificent. Sounding like an Avicii/David Guetta hybrid the song wouldn't sound out of place in the UK charts and I'm sure this is the start of a very successful career for Mans outside of Scandinavia. I've said this and been wrong before, but I can't see any way this won't win come 23rd May.

So there you go, there are my predictions and I'd love to know what you think of them. Drop me a tweet on @theeuro_trip.

As we speak I'm busy packing my bag for Vienna, and you can come with me too! Make sure you follow @theeuro_trip on both Twitter and Instagram for live coverage from the Austrian capital.

Rob

Producer Jonny's Not So Expert Guide to Eurovision #2: Who's Actually Going to Win?

So, as Rob’s continually reminded me, in a Christmas morning-esque excitement, Eurovision is not far away!
On the evening of Saturday 23 May, millions of us will flock to our TV screens to watch a fabulous festivity of colour, sequins, dance – an explosion of musical loveliness.

Now whether you agree with me on that previous statement, or not, Eurovision does take over the country. Everyone likes a good punt, so you never know, you might see a financial return on being forced to watch the contest.

I’m by no means an expert, but here are my top 5 to watch in this year’s sing-off…

NO. 5: Italy: Il Volo - “Grand Amore”

Charming, classy men (oops) with charming, classy voices, this is an excellent entry from the Italians. It’s so nice to hear a song in the native language, with the Italian lyrics enhancing the dramatic nature of the orchestral piano, drums and synths arrangement. Operatic, rock, yet poppy sound that’s make it stick in the mind.
A definite outsider with a good chance of succeeding, will the boys charm their way to the title?

NO. 4: Denmark: Anti Social Media - “The Way You Are”

The sheer irony of the band’s name makes this laughable – this track is poppy, annoyingly catchy and typical Denmark Eurovision style. It’ll get people talking on social media across the continent.
I’ll give the Danes this – it’s nice, cheery and happy, almost reminiscent of a rocked happy clappy song you’d find at the end of a kids TV show. I’m not the biggest fan, but it’s just smells of Eurovision success, just not the top prize (hopefully!).

NO. 3: Sweden: Måns Zelmerlöw “HEROES”

Year on year, Sweden always deliver when it matters, and this track is no exception.
Mixing the wild west twangy guitar and dense dance beat at the start, into a catchy, familiar tap your foot to the beat techno track, I’m a big fan of Heroes. This’ll appeal to those in the middle – an occasional fan of the traditional ballad, just sped up with a 4/4 to the floor foundation.

This sounds like the modern ballad, hitting the Eurovision contest strong, and I like it! Top 3 for me.

NO. 2: Russia: Polina Gagarina “Million Voices”

Russia’s never been popular politically, but with previous history with a number of European countries and allegations of block voting for the former Soviet state, their acts have always performed decently in the contest.

This song is an anthem, hypocritically not possible in the actual country (oops), for freedom, unity and speaking out for justice. Could this be a battle cry to show Russia’s strength, or secret cry of protest? Either way its catchy, and should do well.

NO. 1: Australia: Guy Sebastian "Tonight Again"

Now, I know, this is a controversial choice, THEY’RE NOT EVEN IN EUROPE.
But, the Aussies are joining us for this year’s contest, and I have to say I’m a massive fan of the track! The mix of big drums, sax in the back and soulful/swing style makes it stick in my mind. Incredibly catchy with an unknown sense of ‘cool’ about it – not something we usually find in a Eurovision track (c’mon lets be honest with ourselves!).

They go and steal The Ashes and now they might, just MIGHT, win Eurovision. Nice return on a bet made on these lot I’d imagine!

STAY TUNED TO THE EURO TRIP

So those are my tips, but as with every race, some random outsider may pop up and steal the show. Could it be Electric Velvet for the UK? Probably not. I’d hope for a top 10 finish, mind.
Here at Euro Trip HQ we can’t wait for the contest, and we’re delighted to be bringing you exclusive access to the heart of Eurovision from the heart of Vienna, in the days leading up to Europe’s musical bout.

We’ll be releasing more details, but have a look out on Twitter, blogs and beyond as Rob (and his lovely girlfriend Emma) bring you lots of Eurovision loveliness from Austria.

Is Europe better at spotting hit music than the UK?

With Omi's Cheerleader making its way to the top of the UK chart yesterday, it is clear that European music is having more of an impact on the music scene of our nation than ever before. But is the UK slow to spot an emerging #1 hit?

While Omi himself may have been born and raised in Jamaica, it was Denmark which first sent him to the top of their charts in January of this year (as heard on the European Music Chart). The surrounding Scandinavian nations soon followed suit, showing that in some cases, the UK is actually a long way behind other countries when it comes to spotting a chart hit.
Omi is the current UK #1 with 'Cheerleader'

Take a further look at this Sunday's Official Chart and you will see a number of other tracks, previously featured on the Euro Trip, which are only just making waves across the UK. Kygo's wonderfully summery 'Firestone' was a chart topper in Norway over three months ago, while AronChupa's mind puzzling 'I'm an Albatroz' has been huge in Europe for weeks now.

You only have to look at two massive summer anthems from last year to exemplify my point. Remember Mr Probz's 'Waves' and Nico and Vinz' massive track 'Am I Wrong?'. Both originated in the Netherlands and Norway respectively.

As the European mainland continues to have more of an influence on the UK music chart, I thought I'd have a go at predicting the next songs which will soon be making their way across the channel and making it big on our shores.

Kygo ft. Parson James - Stole the Show

The follow up to 'Firestone' Kygo has collaborated with the stunning vocals of American singer Parson James. The track entered the UK chart at #49 this week, and will continue to rise as Kygo's reputation looks set to increase.

Klingande - Riva

This is better than Jubel! There you go, I said it. With the weather getting warmer and the evenings getting longer, this track is the perfect accompaniment to relax to in the summer sun. Give this one a couple of plays and you'll fall in love with it.

Mans Zelmerlow - Heroes

Yes, I know it's from Eurovision. 'Heroes' looks set to take the continent by storm should it win Eurovision 2015 as expected. The track has a wonderfully modern feel to it, channeling both Avicii and David Guetta's recent work. Mans is a huge superstar in Sweden, and I have a feeling we'll be cheering his name over the next few months.

Producer Jonny's Not So Expert Guide to Eurovision #1: Duets

When Rob asked me to do this, I looked surprised, but willingly decided to take up the challenge. In the weeks leading up to Vienna’s wonderful contest I’ll be providing an ‘alternative’ look at some of the components of this continental bout – alternative in the sense that I come from a classic rock and indie loving background, with a bad pronunciation of European names. So, enjoy…

TWO TO TANGO?
With the UK’s entry announced on Saturday, you’ll have noticed that Electro Velvet are composed of two singers: Alex Larke and Bianca Nicholas. Now their track ‘Still In Love With You’ has drawn across a variety of opinions (I’m holding out hope), but it coincidentally brings us to a topic of interest: Duets Yes? No? Should we, could we take the risk? All of the thoughts crossing the musical minds of our continent. Well my expert friends and average music lovers a like, have a look at these and maybe you’ll find an answer to those dilemmas…

1. SING, LITTLE BIRDIE – PEARL CARR & TEDDY JOHNSON (UNITED KINGDOM, 1959) Placing 2nd all the way back in 1959, this is not your typical Eurovision entry! Pearl and Teddy show how all things Euro have changed over the years. No ferrets, Irish twins and silly violins – just good old swing. One to tap your foot to…

2. DUETTT – ELIZABETH ANDREASSENN & JAN WERNER DANIELSEN (NORWAY, 1994) Now I know what you’re thinking….we don’t actually know what they’re singing (Norwegian translators speak now!). BUT embrace this please – its not often that a country sings in their own language. Its passionate, vaguely romantic and soppy. Good old cheese ain’t so bad once in a while, ey?

3. JAN JAN – INGA & ANUSH (ARMENIA, 2009)
Everybody must be ready…. Apparently. A more modern entry, Amernia’s Jan Jan shows of the characteristics of the delightfully vibrant Inga & Anush. I see the song as a case of marmite – personally I find it difficult, but no doubt someone will embrace the craziness, and those endlessly spinning dancers.

4. IN A MOMENT LIKE THIS – CHANEE & N’EVERGREEN (DENMARK, 2010)
In a week where Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams’ Blurred Lines was found to have copied a famous Marvin Gaye track, I can’t help but notice the similarities in this track’s catchy riff with The Police’s classic ‘Every Breath You Take’. But, despite that, this has to be my favourite. Yes, slightly cheesy, pyrotechnics everywhere, but a good job from the Danes….and its in English, hooray!

Got a duet you’d like to share? Drop us a tweet @TheEuro_Trip and stay up to date with the latest Eurovision news. I’ll be tweeting the odd bit about the contest on my personal twitter too, that’s @jfreeman_93.

I’ll be back with another alternative guide soon, on goodness knows what, but for now I’ll let my expert presenter resume normal service. Jonny

Everybody calm down about the UK's Eurovision 2015 entry

Firstly, let's get things clear. Electro Velvet and their song 'Still in Love with You' isn't my taste in music. Not that it counts for much of course. I wasn't a fan of Marie N in 2002, Lena in 2010 or Ell and Nicki in 2011, didn't stop them becoming winners though did it?

When I sat down for the reveal on Saturday night, I was left very confused by our choice, what place does 'Electro Swing' have in the Eurovision Song Contest? We're so used to ballads and up-tempo pop numbers that it came as a huge shock, a huge gamble.

But in a year like this one, where every song is a middle-of-the-road ballad, one thing is for sure; Electro Velvet WILL stand out on 23rd May. The song is already on track to be the most viewed of any entry so far this year on You Tube. Whatever the reason, the voting public of Europe will be well aware of our song come the Contest itself.
Electro Velvet - Alex Larke and Bianca Nicholas

Of course, their performance on the night is everything. Molly was one of the favourites to win last year, but her nervy performance left her languishing in 17th position. To reinforce this point look no further than Amaury Vassili, favourite to win for France in Dusseldorf, his poor routine led to a disappointing 15th place finish. On the opposite end of the spectrum, look at past winners. Loreen, Eimielle and Conchita all captured the hearts of the continent with the staging and live performance of their entries.

All those who say 'let the public decide' when it comes to our entry, let me remind you of the last time all aspects of the decision were left to the people of the UK. Andy Abraham, final position, 25th.

Give the BBC some slack too, their working on a fraction of the budget of recent years. Gone are the days we could plough hundreds of thousands of pounds into an entry for Eurovision. The corporation as a whole are facing huge cuts and massive change, and let's be honest, how well we do in Eurovision is going to be well down the list in terms of their priorities for 2015.

So with Vienna now just a couple of months away, let's get behind Electro Velvet. The BBC have made a huge gamble this year, and should be applauded for being so brave with the song selection.

I'm a Eurovision fan, and whether or not the UK succeeds in the Contest, that will always be the case. But come that three minutes on the 23rd May we all need to wave our union jacks with pride. We owe our nation that at least.

UK to reveal UK Entry on 7th March

So finally after months of speculation and rumour, the BBC announced 7th March will be the date the United Kingdom's Eurovision entry will finally be revealed.

I look ahead to that announcement, and attempt to contain my excitement...

No podcast, no problem!

I am genuinely gutted not to be able to bring you a podcast this week. (As I write this I'm busy feeling sorry for myself in my pyjamas with what can only described as man flu.)

But fear not!

I couldn't not bring you a new music fix this week, and some of this week's songs are massive!

Lorenzo Jovanotti - Sabato

This track is all about an enticing beat, interwoven with hauntingly simple lyrics. I'm a sucker for anyone singing in Italian, and this song doesn't disappoint. You'll be humming along to this without even knowing it as soon as you hear it.

Fritz Kalkbrenner - Void

A chilled out sound with all the makings of a big summer hit - not sure why it was released at the end of January! While Fritz sings in English, the European accent with which he does so gives this song an even greater unique feel.

World of Girls - Summer Without You

Any Eurovision fan will know that World of Girls failed in their attempt to represent Denmark with this very song. Why?! I love the lyrics, the uptempo beat, and the chemistry between the band members. It is refreshing to see a European girl band sounding so good!

I hope you enjoy this week's new music, and I can assure you The Euro Trip podcast will return next week! Make sure you follow me on Twitter @TheEuro_Trip

No it isnt April Fools Day, Australia are taking part in Eurovision...

When I first heard the news, the first thing I did was check what date it was. (Not even kidding.) I couldn't believe what I was reading. Australia, a country located nearly TEN THOUSAND kilometres from their nearest Eurovision neighbours Russia, will be taking to the stage in Vienna.

Firstly, I can kind of empathise with the EBU. As we all know this is Eurovision's 60th anniversary, and thus they want to make this year's contest one to remember - and now we certainly know that will be the case.

Neither can you argue with the appetite for Eurovision in Australia. Last year #SBSEurovision trended worldwide during their broadcast of the Grand Final, no mean feat. This fact alone helps make the argument that Australia deserve to take part in the contest more than many nations with a long history in Eurovision. Take the likes of Spain and the United Kingdom for example, where the majority of their populations consider Eurovision some kind of big joke.

SBS also invest thousands in covering the contest, Sam Pang (brilliant name) and Julia Zemiro have been in the commentary box every year since 2009.

Jessica Mauboy in Copenhagen
And lets not forget last year, when Jessica Mauboy took Europe by storm as last year's interval act.

For me this shows that the plan to have Australia at Eurovision has long been in the mind of the big players at the EBU. Last year's interval act served to test the waters of Europe and Eurovision fans alike, seeing how they reacted to Australia's arrival on the big stage.

Fan reaction has understandably been mixed. @ESCSamuel tweeted the thoughts of many Eurovision fans with a simple "HOW THE HELL DO YOU RESPOND TO THIS?" while others, such as @C_NowakiESC made a good point "UK will get some nice points from the Aussies too. I'm so glad!"

This is where I'm at, my thoughts are mixed. While delighted I'm going to what will be a historic Eurovision Song Contest, I do hope this remains a one-off. The EUROvision Song Contest, simply by its nature, should remain a EUROPEAN music contest. It has been that way for 59 years already, and the fact it is still going shows that is a pretty successful recipe.

But for this year, lets embrace it. Eurovision is amazing, and rather than just uniting a continent, this time round it is bringing people from opposite ends of the world together.

The next question remains, who will represent our friends down under? Kylie? Jason? The possibilities are endless.
